Grade 3 Votes!

The three Grade 3 classes held an election for choosing a mascot.  Students learned about the electoral process and about their rights and responsibilities as a Canadian citizen. Classes listened to campaign speeches by the characters. The candidates were Desneiges the polar bear, Max the walrus, Charlie the raven, Neevee the caribou and Sam the wolf.  After lining up to be checked off on the voter list, the kids were passed a ballot, went to the voting cubicle and then placed their ballot in the box. Not one ballot was spoiled as the kids were very careful to follow the procedure! Once the final vote was cast, the ballot box was emptied and the votes were counted.  The winner was Sam the wolf!  A stuffy will be purchased to be shared by the classes and he will accompany Grade 3 kids to special outings, field trips and activities. Classes are also going to graph the election results.  It was a great learning activity!

Flat Stanley

We hope Flat Stanley enjoys his time with your family!  The kids were very excited about planning an adventure for him.  A note was sent home explaining the project and also a letter you may use if you decide to send him in the mail.  If your family goes on a vacation please take him along or you can send him on his own trip to visit a friend or relative.  He may also accompany your child to clubs, games, activities, family outings or whatever you choose!  Pictures of Flat Stanley can be sent to sarnason@sjsd.net or you may print them yourself and send them in.  Students may do this as often as they want but they must include a brief write up (at least a sentence or two but more if they choose) to describe what Stanley was doing.  This will inspire the kids to do some writing.  If Flat Stanley does some travelling it will be fun to track where he has visited as part of our Social Studies component of the project.  Stanley photos and write ups are due by May 1st.  We will then summarize  his adventures and track his travels.  Don't fret if Stanley has a mishap and needs to be replaced, just request a new one.  This should be a fun project!

October Update!

It's hard to believe that October is already here. This month, our class will have the opportunity to work with artist Wayne Elliott. Mr. Elliot is a visual artist who has a wealth of experience using drawing and sketching to build success for all students. His participation in the St. James-Assiniboia S. D. program for 'The Integrated Arts' allows students the opportunity to develop strengths and skills that build confidence through the Arts, but also provides avenues to use these in other areas of our academic learning. Mr. Elliott will join our class on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Please stay tuned for session pictures. Pictures are now posted on Instagram!!!

Me In a Box

                                                                  Me In A Box Project

As Social Studies and Language Arts activity, the kids will be creating an artifact box that tells the class what makes them unique!  The kids may include "artifacts" that represent an important event in their life, achievement, interest etc.  Parents please help your child find a box and make their choices.  Please bring Me In A Box to school by September 30th.  At school they will write what it is and why they chose it.  The students will also be given some time to decorate their box.

If your child cannot find a specific object that they really want to include, they may find pictures in magazines, bring a photograph, draw or "make" the artifact at home.  Pick at least 6 and no more than 8 of the following suggestions and bring them to school.

- Where I love
- Hobbies
- Clubs I belong to
- My ethnic background
- My family
- When I was little
- My dream
- The best time I had
- A sport I enjoy
- A vacation
- My friends
- Something dear to me

They will present Me In a Box in a small group of class.  Their effort will be evaluated using a rubric.
