26 May 2016
Dear Sansome Families,

Students at Sansome School have the opportunity to stay at school in our supervised lunch program at no cost. However, this program needs the support of lunch supervisors for students during the lunch hour. At this time, we are looking for up to 9 lunch supervisors for the remainder of this year, as well as for next year. Lunch supervisors are paid by the school division, and must have criminal record and child abuse registry checks, but these are available from the Sansome School office. If you or someone you know might be interested, please call the school office at 204-889-6000, or send email to Mrs. Nuytten at rnuytten@sjsd.net. Thank you in advance for your ongoing support.

Teacher Message

We are enjoying the warmer days but still working hard as we move towards the end of our year together.  It will be a busy time coming up as we have lots planned. We wanted to update you on some of the learning activities going on in our class.

 Reading Bingo

While we are no longer tracking our reading with the Reading Logs, we are still encouraging the kids to spend time every day reading.  It’s a perfect wind down activity before bed.  Our Reading Bingo challenge has the students reading and doing follow up activities in class.

Chocolate Theme

What a delicious way to end the year!  After reading the class story the B.F.G. by Roald Dahl we decided to continue to study books by this author by reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. We will also be reading Chocolate Fever.  We will write our own stories about getting a crazy fever from too much of a good thing like the boy in the story developed.  We will also use this theme as a spring board for some other sweet writing!
We are excited to have received a last minute invitation to watch a production of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory by Lincoln students!  That is definitely perfect timing!

Social Studies

Our current theme is Ancient Egypt. The students are very keen to learn about mummies, pharaohs, pyramids and their way of life over 3000 years ago!  We are integrating Social Studies and Language Arts by doing a class novel study from the Magic Tree House series entitled Mummies In The Morning. These adventure books by Mary Pope Osborne are entertaining and informative to read. We will be writing postcards
from Egypt and planning our own Magic Tree House adventure story. The kids are building Language Arts skills as they broaden their base of knowledge. There is a lot of new information to learn and we have some great activities lined up. We are ready to be mummified!

Bookcreator
The class is creating presentations on Ancient Egypt using Book Creator on the Ipads. The kids worked are working in pairs and researching topics using books from the library and then adding pictures from the internet. They will share these projects by presenting them on the Smartboard.

April News

Teacher Message
With only three months left to go, we are on the final stretch of our year.  It was great to see so many families at the conferences. The kids are proud of their work!  Spring is a time for change and growth whether you are a plant or a kid!  For some it may be a fresh start to work on some personal goals or “blossom” academically.
The month of March was busy and it was so enjoyable to have a Staff Appreciation Week!  We loved all the yummy treats and luncheons. Thank you, you are all awesome!

Language Arts
We are venturing into the land of giants in our Jack and The Beanstalk theme.  We have read many versions of this famous tale and compared them.  The class has written their own fractured fairytale based on this story. The pictures that will be accompanying them will make you laugh.  Check out our bulletin board next week or our Instagram to see the final product. Their creativity is impressive!  All the kids have made progress in their writing skills. Next, they will be writing Limericks and creating Fairy Tale Math equations. We have also tied this theme in to our study of Mexico by reading Mexican fairy tales.
Speaking of fairy tales… Permission forms have been sent home and we are excited to go see the Shrek musical production in the third week of April!

Social Studies
We can’t all go on a hot vacation to Mexico but we can at least learn about their land and culture! That is exactly what we have been doing in March. The class will have a Fiesta Day as an activity later this month with crafts, food and fun! Ole!

                                  Happy Spring!
